BREAKING NEWS: Tinubu renames Uni-Abuja after Yakubu Gowon

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has resolved to rename the University of Abuja (Uni-Abuja) after former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. General Gowon was toppled by General Murtala Muhammed in July 1975, after the former conceived the idea of relocating Nigeria’s federal capital from Lagos to Abuja. His successor, General Muhammed actualized the dream in February 1976.

The Nigerian Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

Alhaji Idris said the university will be renamed ‘Yakubu Gowon University’ to “honour the elder statesman” who ruled Nigeria for nine years.

However, the name change will still need to be formally approved by the National Assembly, the Minister explained.
