The HUT Foundation Conducts Successful Sensitization Campaign on Peaceful Elections

On February 17, 2023, the HUT Foundation, a non-governmental organisation located in Abuja committed to promoting peaceful coexistence, carried out a sensitization campaign in the Karu Municipal Area Council. The campaign aimed to educate members of the community on the importance of pursuing peace during the upcoming elections.

The foundation was warmly received at the chief’s palace, where community heads and youth leaders were in attendance. Etalong Thomas Alama, the campaign coordinator, delivered a talk on the need to promote peace during the election period.

Among the issues discussed were the use of phones at the polling unit, the wearing of campaign materials, and the selling of items. These practices can lead to election rigging and violence, and it is essential to avoid them. The Nigerian Electoral Act prohibits the use of lethal weapons at the polling unit, and security personnel cannot wield weapons at the polling unit. It is up to the leaders of the various communities to ensure that their members shun violence or its triggers.

The foundation distributed stickers to the chief’s representatives, symbolizing the community’s commitment to peaceful elections. They also conducted interviews with locals to get their views on the upcoming elections and if they have ever been affected by election-related violence.

HUT Foundation is dedicated to promoting peace and development in communities across Nigeria. With a team of passionate and experienced professionals, the foundation develops and implements programs aimed at building sustainable peace, promoting human rights, and empowering communities to take charge of their future.

Also in attendance were other members of the foundation, namely: Jidechukwu Austin, Ikenna Elvis, Zainab Lawal, Henrietta Chukwunweike, and, the Foundation’s founder, Precious Nkem Ogbuenyi.
