Okorocha bailed, beats APC screening deadline, supports consensus candidacy

By a hair’s breadth, former Imo State governor, Mr. Rochas Okorocha perfected his bail conditions, paid N500 million bail bond and raced to the venue of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential screening in Abuja minutes before the deadline on Tuesday night.

Okorocha’s attendance for the screening exercise was doubtful after he was arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission last week Tuesday.

However, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail on Tuesday morning in the sum of N500 million and a surety in like sum.

With the latest development, Okorocha perfected the bail in less than 12 hours and now waiting to get the approval of the APC to contest the presidential ticket of the ruling party.

The former governor, who is being tried on a 17-count charge of money laundering to the tune of N2.9 billion, is number 17 on the 23-man list of APC presidential aspirants.

Mr. Okorocha will now have to clear his membership status, financial status, academic credentials, and other requirements for a presidential candidate as spelt out in the constitution of the APC.

The outspoken aspirant is accused of conspiring with others, including a member of his party, APC and five companies to steal from public coffers.

He has denied any wrongdoing.
